Ниже разберем предложения в которых могли возникнуть вопросы : 

• My family is big. Мы используем is потому, что family собирательное существительное и мы рассматриваем семью как одно целое. В случае если мы рассматриваем каждого члена семьи будет так : All of his family are doctors ( Все в его семье доктора).
• She is fond of reading books and playing the guitar. Когда мы говорим выражаем эмоции по отношению к действию ( я люблю читать, я ненавижу бегать и т. д.), мы к глаголу в первой форме добавляем -ing.
• My elder sister Natasha is nineteen, she goes to the university, and she wants to be a teacher of history. В данном предложении мы используем Present Simple а не  Present Continuous, так как мы изображаем факт а не действие которое происходит сейчас.
